The Permanent Fund

The first trust fund in Brazil was recently set up by Instituto Rio.  The Vera Pacheco Jordão Trust Fund was created with a generous donation by GERALDO JORDÃO PEREIRA, ex-President of Editora Sextante. The first grants made possible by this fund will be disbursed in the first half of 2006.

Now this fund has been set up, the possibility arises of enlarging it and thus of achieving, in only a few years, the necessary conditions to give financial sustainability to social work in western Rio de Janeiro, which is the focal region for Instituto Rio. What most differentiates Instituto Rio in the Brazilian context is thus that it opens up a new avenue to local development by mobilizing national resources – that is, locally funded, local support.
Since 2006 Vera Pacheco Jordão Funds have been given supporte to 70 projects in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, taking benefits to aproximatly 25 thousand people. The total amount of U$ 220,000 has been already transfered to the local organizations, including the 5% Instituto Rio administration fee, was transferred wholly to these endeavours. Another part of the fund returns was incorporated into the amount initially applied, so as to maintain the fund at its original value.

The funds of the Vera Pacheco Jordão Trust Fund are managed by Armínio Fraga, Antônio Fernando de Bulhões Carvalho, Cícero Alencar, Francisco Mussnick, João Pedro Gouvêa Vieira e José Olympio da Veiga Pereira.
